How to Choose Custom Grillz: Gold, Diamonds and Fit

Updated September 29, 2026 by Cali Grillz.

Choosing custom grillz starts with four decisions: the look you want, the material, how many teeth you want to cover, and your complete budget. Then check the impression process and the support available after delivery. This guide helps you compare those choices before you order from Cali Grillz.

Should I choose gold or diamond grillz?

Start with the detail you want people to notice. Polished gold puts the shape and metal color at the center of the design. Open faces, fangs and textured finishes create different effects. Diamond designs add stones, with choices ranging from accents to more extensive coverage.

Browse our custom gold grillz and natural diamond grillz, then compare specific products. Look closely at the shape of each tooth, the visible metal and the arrangement of stones. Choose a design you like from several angles, rather than relying on one close-up photograph.

What do 10K, 14K and 18K mean?

Karat describes the proportion of gold in a gold alloy. On the 24-part scale, 10K is approximately 41.7% gold, 14K is approximately 58.3%, and 18K is 75%. The remaining portion consists of other metals. These proportions are explained in GIA's guide to gold content.

Cali Grillz offers 10K, 14K and 18K options on selected designs, with yellow, white and rose gold choices where listed. Compare the same design and tooth count when checking karat prices. Ask about the alloy's materials if you have metal sensitivities, and discuss oral jewelry with your dentist before ordering.

Are diamond-cut and diamond-dust grillz made with diamonds?

Those finish names alone do not mean a piece contains diamond stones. Diamond-cut and diamond-dust descriptions can refer to texture worked into the metal. A textured gold design and a design set with natural diamonds are different products, even when both catch the light.

For a diamond piece, read the stone description, clarity information and setting details on its product page. Ask about diamond color, total stone weight for your selected configuration and any available grading documentation if those details matter to your decision. A photograph or a clarity abbreviation cannot answer all of those questions. Our team can help clarify the details of a specific design before you buy.

For help interpreting diamond specifications, read our guide to the four Cs of diamonds.

How do I choose the tooth count and row?

Decide whether you want an upper piece, a lower piece or both. Then check how the product lists its tooth count. A count for one row and a paired selection are different configurations, so review the selected options carefully.

A smaller design can emphasize a few teeth; broader coverage creates a more continuous look. Available counts vary by design. If you are comparing two pieces, keep the row, tooth count, karat and finish consistent so you can understand what changes the appearance and price.

Compare single teeth, connected pairs, spacers and rows in our grillz types and placement guide.

What should my budget include?

Build your budget around the configuration you intend to order. Check the material, tooth count, stone choices and paid customizations. The displayed product total already includes the required mold kit: $11 for one row or $22 for both rows, for each product. Selected paid customizations update that total. Your grillz and kit appear as separate cart items; add shipping and applicable tax when planning your final checkout total. A collection's starting price may describe a different configuration from the one in your cart.

Review the cart before checkout and confirm that it includes your intended selections. If a product's price or choices are unclear, contact Cali Grillz with the product link and the options you want. Resolve those details before placing a custom order.

How does the custom mold process work?

Custom grillz are made using your dental impression. After choosing your design and ordering the appropriate mold kit, follow the kit's instructions and return the completed impression using the directions provided. Your impression must reach us before we can make your piece.

Read the instructions before starting, and contact our team if you are unsure about a step. Choosing the right kit and completing the impression carefully are part of the order process. Our ordering and mold-kit FAQs explain the stages and provide a useful reference while you prepare your order.

When should I order for an event?

Allow for separate stages: kit delivery, completing and returning your impression, custom production, and delivery of the finished grillz. Faster shipping does not shorten production. For a birthday, performance or other fixed date, contact our team before purchasing and review the shipping information. Use the current estimate for your specific order when planning. Our custom grillz production and delivery guide explains the mold-to-delivery stages and usual production times.

What care should I consider before buying?

Ask your dentist about wearing grillz. The American Dental Association's MouthHealthy guidance on grillz recommends limiting wear, removing them before meals, cleaning them daily, and keeping up with brushing and flossing. It warns against using jewelry cleaners or other products that are dangerous to ingest.

Get cleaning instructions appropriate to your exact metal and stone setting before using a product on your grillz. Avoid assuming that a cleaner intended for a chain or ring is appropriate for something worn in your mouth. If your piece feels loose, tight or uncomfortable, stop wearing it and contact us about fit; consult your dentist about irritation or other oral-health concerns.

What happens if I need help after delivery?

Review our custom-order and refit policy before purchasing. Custom orders are final sale for change-of-mind returns. Contact us within seven days of delivery for free refit work; customers pay the shipping costs. This service is separate from a refund, and your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Keep your order number and contact our team promptly about a fit concern. The policy also explains potential additional charges following customer-caused delays beyond 90 days, with a written quote and approval before an added charge.

When comparing customer experiences, our guide to reading grillz reviews explains which product and order details to look for.

What should I check before placing my order?

  • The exact design, material, row and tooth count.
  • Whether the design contains stones or a textured metal finish.
  • The mold-kit requirement and complete cart total.
  • The impression, production and delivery stages.
  • The care instructions and custom-order policy.
